Tortola

The main island of the British Virgin Islands, Tortola , is not only beautiful but full of life and activities that one can enjoy on their vacation. The country name, Tortola, means "Turtle Dove" and is named for its shape and beauty. This rocky island is 12 miles long by 3 miles wide and overcome by a mountain range, with its highest peak, Mount Sage, shooting up to 1750 ft high. The island is of volcanic origin, and a central mountainous "spine" forms its core with a series of lesser ridges which spills into the sea. There are many spectacular views that one could enjoy from their beachfront villa, from vistas opening up to islands that surround Tortola across the clear blue sea to gorgeous colors of the reefs below.
Many say that driving on Tortola is an experience in itself. The terrain is very different from most of the other places people visit. Crossing the island often involves dramatic ascents and descents along precipitous roads, such as the switch-back road leading to the beach at Brewers Bay. Some visitors feel safer in jeeps and four-wheel-drive vehicles, rather than just any car. Beware and make sure to remember that the islanders drive on the left! Tortola is so mountainous that the airstrip had to be built on the neighboring Beef Island. One may need some extra time to take in the scenic views that will be seen long the adventurous ride. Not only Tortola has the incredible sites of Ridge Road, the rugged heights make you stop often to just gaze, or to take a photo. Additionally, the original sugar cane rum distillery is still operating in Cane Garden Bay and is well worth a visit. Along with all the activity and sightseeing that one could do on land, there are many beaches and water activities that are also available on the breathtaking islands of Tortola.
Whether you are a person that enjoys the sun, a windsurfer who melts for a good wave, or just want to enjoy a good book in a hammock off the porch of you beach front villa, the beaches of Tortola can make your island getaway dream come true. Whether you want to be a social butterfly and meet the islanders or go into relaxation hibernation in your villa, Tortola is the place for you. From snorkeling above the colorful reefs to body surfing in the Caribbean waves, there are so many activities to enjoy. An active vacationer would need schedule time to visit Cane Garden Bay Beach. This popular beach is known for its gentle surf and the beautiful bay. In addition to the great beaches, there are also many fun seaside bars, restaurants, inns, villas, and gift shops that give Tortola a boardwalk appeal. Unlike Cane Garden Bay, Long Bay is a mile long stretch of white sand beach which perfect for tranquil sunset walks for the romantic quiet getaway. The western end of the beach, is lined with palms and sea grapes that offers great solitude and good swimming. For general information about Tortola visit their government's country profile.
