Saint Thomas

Saint Thomas, is part of the United States Virgin Islands. Located right next to Saint Croix (within forty miles), Saint Thomas island can be described as being covered with red-roofed buildings and houses. The capital city, Charlotte Amalie, sits among lush green hills, and is widely considered the most beautiful port in the Caribbean. The duty-free shopping, hotels and restaurants on St. Thomas are second to none; this can be part of the reason that tourism is one of the most important industries' for the island. The city's reputation as the "shopping destination of the Caribbean", draws in visitors from all over the region and around the world.

Sports and different types of activities are part of the lifestyle on St. Thomas. The island is known for its world class yachting and sports fishing. There is a guided kayaking and snorkeling tour through the St. Thomas Marine Sanctuary and Mangrove Lagoon. This popular activity educates visitors on the fragile ecosystem of the lagoon and how to preserve this lagoon for the future. Coki Point, Magens Bay, and Water Island are some islands that offer excellent snorkeling. Snuba, which combines the techniques of snorkeling and scuba diving without the heavy dive gear and extensive training courses, can be done on St. Thomas. Windsurfing equipment and instructions are available at several locations. However, if you like to stay dry, submarines and glass-bottom boats let visitors see the underwater beauty of the islands without getting their feet wet.
Along with the breathtaking beaches and fun water activities, one cannot forget the history of this island. Fort Christian, with its Victorian clock tower and stone walls painted bright red, is one site that is full of history. Built in 1671, the fort was the first structure in Charlotte-Amalie, and is the oldest building still in use on St. Thomas. Today it houses historical exhibits and art galleries that many vacationers visit when enjoying their time on the island. Additionally, there is the Seven Arches Museum, located in a private home originally built in 1857, which is a monument to the history of the property and 19th century Caribbean life. Over a period of 12 years, a couple researched historical records, rebuilt the house from the foundation up, excavated parts of the courtyard, and creating what is now a welcoming recreation of a bygone era. So whether one is relaxing on the beach, shopping, or learning some of the history of St. Thomas, it seems that there is always something to fit one's vacationing needs on this island.
